Albanian Prime Minister Declares: Our Country Will Not Change its Approach Towards the Iranian Opposition Group of the MEK Iran

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama reiterated that his country will not change its approach towards the Iranian opposition group of the MEK Iran.

Prime Minister Rama made the announcement at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels on January 29.

Prime Minister Rama also referred to the recent expulsion of the two so-called "diplomats" of the regime, in fact terrorists, for "activities incompatible with their diplomatic status", a phrase previously used in espionage cases. The terrorists in question have been identified as Mohammad Ali Arz Peimanemati and Seyed Ahmad Hosseini Alast. Albania had previously expelled, in December 2018, the ambassador of the regime Gholamhossein Mohammad Nia and Mostafa Roudaki, a member of the regime's Ministry of Information.

Prime Minister Rama said: "Albania has agreed to shelter several thousand people whose lives have been threatened by the Tehran regime. It is part of who we are, of our tradition. It was also a humanitarian operation for us. We will not change our traditions or our approach to these people. As far as criminal activities in Albania are concerned, we have expelled diplomats and other people who carried out activities that did not fit into those normally carried out by diplomats ". Albania has agreed to host around 3,000 members of the MEK Iran (Mujahedin-e Khalq). Prior to their transfer to Albania, members of the MEK Iran were in Camp Liberty, Iraq, where they were subjected to constant attacks by the Iranian regime and an inhuman siege, in which they were denied access to health facilities and drugs.

Before being transferred to Camp Liberty, members of the MEK Iran resided in what had been their home for thirty years: Camp Ashraf. However, in 2009, when the United States withdrew its forces from Iraq, they entrusted the security of the MEK Iran to the Iraqi government, led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, an agent of the Iranian regime. Maliki immediately imposed a medical embargo on Camp Ashraf and carried out several attacks against members of the MEK Iran, despite the fact that they enjoyed the status of "protected people" according to the IV Geneva Convention. Maliki forced the MEK Iran to move to Camp Liberty, a much smaller camp, where they could easily have been hit by missiles. The regime's plan was to massacre all members of the MEK Iran in Iraq or to induce them to surrender to the ruling theocracy in Iran, imposing harsh living conditions on them. However, this plan failed thanks to the resoluteness of the MEK Iran members, to the international campaign led by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), to the help of illustrious personalities, and of course, to the leading role of Albania, who agreed to host the members of the MEK Iran.
